Matthew Troyer (b. 1988) is an artist, visual anthropologist, educator, and former U.S. Marine Corps Combat Photographer whose work critically examines the enduring impact of war and militarization on individuals, communities, and culture. Working through a multimodal practice rooted in photography, he integrates video, sound, and sculptural installation to explore how narratives of conflict shape memory, identity, and the American imagination. Drawing on his experience as a veteran, Troyer investigates the cultural forces that frame the legacy of war, prompting reflection on its continued presence in everyday life and consumer culture.
Troyer received his BFA, with honors, in Photography and Imaging from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2022 and an MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2024. He will receive his MA in Visual Anthropology from the University of Manchester, England in 2026.
